ABB, a technology leader in electrification and automation, is shaping a more sustainable and resource-efficient future through innovative solutions that connect engineering expertise with advanced software. With a legacy spanning over 140 years and a workforce of more than 105,000 employees across 100+ countries, ABB continues to optimise how industries manufacture, move, power and operate. Central to ABB’s operations is a firm commitment to conducting business securely, ethically and respectfully on a global scale, applying best practices to safeguard personnel—including contractors and third parties—as well as its assets, thereby reinforcing the resilience of its reputation and operations.

Integrated Security Framework for a Safe Business Environment

ABB’s security programme is built on three main workstreams aimed at safeguarding personnel, assets and business operations worldwide. The first workstream focuses on travel security, implementing policies and procedures that ensure the safety of employees, contractors and dependents traveling on behalf of ABB. The second is ABB’s physical security programme, which encompasses a range of measures designed to protect people, property and the company’s reputation across facilities and project sites. Finally, the crisis management programme enhances ABB’s resilience by preparing the organisation to respond to and recover from disruptive events.

As explained by Stephen Karl Jones, Head of Security for APAC at ABB, these workstreams are all underpinned by a culture of respect for human rights, consistent with international standards and local laws. “ABB’s security measures not only safeguard its operations but also reflect its commitment to conducting business in a way that is ethical, secure and responsible”, he emphasises.

ABB’s Approach to Security Partnerships

ABB often collaborates with Private Security Providers (PSPs) to implement its security protocols. In most cases, these providers employ non-lethal solutions, adhering to local laws. Where armed security is necessary, ABB requires a thorough risk assessment to justify the use of firearms. The company has established rigorous training, reporting and documentation processes for all PSPs, emphasising the principle that force must only be used when it is legal, necessary and proportionate, and never in a way that would violate the rights of individuals.

ABB’s dedication to maintaining high standards in its security operations aligns with its broader commitment to human rights. As mandated by law, the company regularly reviews its processes to ensure that human rights are managed effectively and risks are mitigated throughout its value chain. According to Mr. Jones, these assessments equip business leaders with the insights needed to prioritise initiatives and set relevant targets for improving security practices.

Strategic Alliance with ICoCA for Elevated Standards

In 2023, ABB took its human rights and security efforts a step further by training all security managers in Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD). As part of this ongoing commitment, ABB joined ICoCA as an Observer in May 2024.

“This collaboration allows ABB to enhance its security programmes by leveraging ICoCA’s expertise, particularly through the Association’s online learning programmes, which we have been impressed with”, explains Mr. Jones.

ABB views this partnership as a valuable opportunity for growth and learning, with plans to deepen its engagement with ICoCA in the future.

Looking ahead, ABB is focused on meeting the requirements of the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), particularly in relation to private security providers. The company aims to ensure that PSPs align with these new standards and is looking to ICoCA to support its efforts in performing effective due diligence on PSPs.
