INTER-AMERICAN COURT ADDRESSES CLIMATE CRISIS AND HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS

Between 22-26 April 2024, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights held a Public Hearing on the Request for Advisory Opinion regarding Climate Emergency and Human Rights. A consortium of civil society, led by ICoCA, sent an amicus curiae to the Court discussing the importance of protecting human rights defenders in the extractive context.

On behalf of the consortium, Diana Milena Murcia, Legal Consultant at Universidad El Bosque in Colombia, recommended that the Court express its support for the Montreux Document and the International Code of Conduct as an expression of its political vision on the importance of adequate regulation of private security in the region. States, as well as regional and sub-regional organisations, should also consider the good practices contained in both documents as a guiding framework for their regulatory efforts.
